The British rider put his experience to good use at the World Championships, helping to keep Mark Cavendish sheltered and in the correct position throughout the race.

Hunt may well find himself in a similar position this year as Cavendish joins the team in a jersey the whole Great Britain squad played a part in attaining.

The 2011 season got off to a strong start for the British hard man as he infiltrated a stage one breakaway at the Tour of Qatar en route to a strong sixth place overall.

Hunt was also there to lend his insight throughout the Classics, working hard in the early going and even forcing his way into a timely break at the Tour of Flanders.

An inspirational presence to the team’s core of British riders, Hunt enters his 16th season as a professional in 2012.

On the role of a mentor, he says: "I guess when I was younger it would have been good to have someone point me in the right direction. To know what to expect in the Classics, where to be at the front and when to move and things like that. I guess you learn it over a few years and you aren’t just following, you’re learning from the best.

"But with the team we’ve got and the Sports Directors we’ve got you’ve got most things covered, so it’s great for the young guys coming up.

"For sure the team are getting closer to a big Classics win. The young guys are getting older, and then you’ve got Bernie who’s come on board. Edvald too will come stronger. G, Flecha, Stannard, Hayman - it’s a good classics team.

"I’m sure the team will get more victories. We’ve got Cav now and the GC team is also a lot stronger now. I was new last year but now it feels like I’m a part of the team."
